On coming back to school after christmas, got lots of positive feedback from kids about playing EFlat bass in the school play. The trouble was most of it was 'loved the trumpet playing sir'. How can they think a tuba is a trumpet? Is that really the only brass instrument people know?

Most people, yes. Although one of my music teachers is slightly more educated and thinks I play the tenor horn :icon_rolleyes:

My friend Helen's dad has a trumpet and 'a round thing', which i though she was describing as a french horn  so was extremely confused to find out it was actually a euphonium! Is it just me are euphoniums not round at all in the slightest?

Try explaining the difference between a BBb bass and a "normal tuba."

    "So which is louder?"

    Somebody pass the valium.....

When Vic played a solo at the 2004 Christmas concert at school, the chap at the next table, in a "know it all" tone, informed the rest of his group "that was a euphonium, you know". :icon_rolleyes:

I must admit I am always surprised when one of the un-initiated masses appears to have a clue what the instruments are. I have taken to pretty much accepting that people will always think my Cornet is a trumpet. I do find it hard to believe that people can think that a tuba is a trumpet though! That is scary!
Normally, the next sentence out of their mouths is a reference to Band camp. I got so annoyed with my mates taking the mickey out of it that I made some of them come with me to Pontins one year. A couple of them have now been 3 yrs in a row!! How impressive is that then?!!

While on teaching practice i took my Euphonium in to my class of 5 year olds and played it too them, we spent a lot of time talking about the instrument. Trumpet was the first suggestion that came up when asked what they think it is, i was quite impressed that someone said trombone tho, given that he was 5, it was pretty close!

Most of my family still ask "how the trumpet is going" and as for normal people, i just give up trying to explain- " i play the Euphonium, you wouldnt know what it is"

It has got to the point where i now get far too excited when ever i find anyone who actually does know what a Euphonium is! (non musical people!)

As for explaining the Tuba, still reckon you should stick to the Harold Bishop from Neighbours explanation!

To be honest I don't think most people have got an absolute clue what instruments are in a brass band and what arent. That I am afraid to say is a bit of fact of life!!!

Or indeed what a brass band is!

persins- i've taken friends to band contests, they loved it! its the best way to get them to realise the truth, brass bands are actually just about drinking!

Absolutely, it certainly was when I was playing for Lympstone. Just ask Gill and Charlie! Pontins as an initiation was quite enlightening!!

I always say a Tuba... but smaller, for a tenor horn!! I tried the whole, did you see Ewan McGregor in Brassed off, but that did not work, they're, wow! a brass band movie, geeky!

I've only done one contest with them so far! But are you familiar with the band bra?!

Thirteen Ball- I dont watch it either, but he's a character in the soap that used to, probably still does play the tuba, thats what people seem to recognise!

MUSIC TEACHER!!!!! now thats worrying. If you said pupil I might understand, but the fact your music teacher doesnt know what instruments are what is extremely worrying.

I had a student teacher on placement at my school who told the kids that the Saxophone was in the brass family- one of the kids in the class corrected her! That was just one of her many gaffes!!

My A Level Music teacher thought my Euph was an Eb Tenor Horn. Hmmmmm!

Well according to my mum my horn is a hornet and my music teacher it is a swedish watering can. Try explaining to a load of year 10 lads what it is... Since the doctor who thingy one of my freinds refuses to go anywhere near it, she is convinced it will start firing ammo at her. And noone has seen brassed off :O

It is true that people often don't know a lot about various instruments, and it isn't only brass, but woodwind and strings as well. I think that we can sometimes be too sensitive about it, though: it is quite a specialist area, and if we try comparing it with other fields of interest, we'd probably make just as glaring mistakes: my son's always berating me for not knowing the difference between various motor vehicles, and I wonder how many of us could tell the difference at a glance between various woodworking tools, for example?
