Ireland Colliery Chesterfield Band would like to welcome Gavin Somerset and Martyn Beckett to the ranks just in time for their third consecutive trip to the national finals in September. Gavin joins the percussion section after playing with Unite the Union (City of Sheffield) and many other bands in and around Yorkshire. Another person joining the percussion section again just in time for the finals is Martyn Beckett who played with the band last year and brings with him experience from playing with Shirland, Riddings and many local bands around the Midland area. Commenting on these appointments Ian Knapton MD of ICCB said “ it’s great to welcome these two talented and experienced men into the band room ready for the finals. They will be joining a strong section and will add that bit of spark that Penlee requires”. On sadder news the band will be saying goodbye to two players after the finals in the form of Dr Owen Wedgewood on Soprano Cornet and George Newbould on Principal cornet. Owen joined the band in October last year for contests and a few jobs as his other commitments don’t allow him to commit as much as he would like, but he has been a strong player for the band for that time. He will be making his 17th trip to the finals as a player this year and the band wish him well for the future. The other player who will be leaving us is George Newbould who has been in the band since the age of 12 joining back in late 2008 where he started on 3rd cornet. Since then he has moved up the section playing 2nd cornet, rep cornet and for the last 16 months he has been playing Principal Cornet . He has chosen to move to a local championship section band. Commenting on the departure Ian Knapton commented ”Its always sad to see players leave but the band moves on. Owen joined us when we were in need of a soprano cornet and as I was helping his band out on Bass trombone he kindly accepted the seat and has done a great job supporting us. As for George we have seen him grow into a fine young man. Both players' last contest performance will be at the finals and we wish them all the best. The band are now looking for a Principal cornet to come and take the next step with us in the bands journey in to the 2nd section in 2014.
