    A friend asked me last night what the rules are for numbers in a band for Whit Friday. I have no idea and because I've never taken a band to the marches I can't think of a way to find out, then I remembered the mouthpiece :woo:woo.

    Is it the same as national rules, where you are allowed 25 brass and as many perc as needed or are there different rules?

    Someone must know on here:confused::confused::confused:

    weeeell i think it might depend on the venue. (i think) any number of players can march down, but at some venues theres a limit that can actually play for the proper march. i only say this cos last year at the marches, some of the back row had to take it in turns who sat out at some places. could be completely wrong there though!!

    i think (but im not entirely sure) its as many as you like down the street, but on the proper contest marchy bit where you stand and play (instead of walk and play), its 25 and no percussion.

    Yup, that seems to fit with what the tMP band did last year. All of us marching down the street with a few taking turns on the contest spot.

    As many as you like on the road, 25 on the contest performance but strictly no percs. Im not sure if there is a ruling on what the 25 people have to play though, wether you can have 5 bases and two horns for example. Also not sure about instrument rules, wether an Eb pic or an alto trom is allowed. I think it may be one of the few contests where this would be allowed but dont hold me to it!

    Anyone know who governs the contest?

    Thanks Steve,

    not taking Alliance no need to know about pics or alto trombones but thanks anyway. It was simply trying to find something out that I didn't know the answer to!

    According to most of the write-ups I came across, each contest lays down its own rules, so it might be worth double-checking beforehand just in case!

    True - they do indeed set their own rules - see various sites such as [Delph's] and [Denshaw's], though they seem to pretty much agree on 25 performers for the on-stage contest except for Youth bands.
