Hey everyone, the other day I found that I have a virus on my computer and it keeps popping up every time I use the internet and I think its linked to my start up page.

I downloaded AVG's free virus thing but thats made no difference, everytime i open up my computer and the internet it just tells me I have a virus.

So does anyone know any good programs I could download to get rid of this virus...free of charge of course.

    Cheers Andy

If you go to macafee, you can download the latest 'stinger' file which will get rid of some current threats. You might also like to try spysweeper, as it is possible the virus keeps infecting you because of some spyware on your machine.

Try these and see if they work.

Oh, and at the risk of upsetting you, Andy I do know you are a poor impecunious student, but - how valuable is your data?

Cheers mate will check it out later

Lol as for that... you assume I have my uni work saved...uni work

Most of the stuff is already saved on disk or another computer so should be ok if worst comes to the worst.

If all else fails I'll just throw it out the window and make a claim

Don't forget a good, stout firewall. The one built into Windows is basic - there are free ones such as Zonealarm which are much better (http://www.zonealarm.com/), but you can't beat a hardware firewall, like the one built into my BT Voyager modem.

If its not a virus (which it may well not be from what you've described), go and get Adaware SE from www.lavasoft.com.

Also update your Anti-Virus s/w to the very latest definitions for good measure.

THEN right click on the IE icon on your desktop - DON'T START IT(!)- and select properties.

(If you've got a shortcut on your DT, you can do it from Control Panel/Settings Internet Properties instead.)

You SHOULD be able to change the homepage to "blank" from here, which is probably where you're being reinfected from as a result of the malware changing it.

Start up Adaware and get its latest definitions when it asks you... Run it as a Full scan, and it should clean the rest of the mess up successfully.

Note: MOST antivirus products aren't good at dealing with browser hijacks - which is what this sounds like. Often the browser is pointed to a particular site that causes the download of a trojan, which if allowed to run permits other nasty exploits.... AV products usually pick up the trojen - if they are up to date enough(!) - and will prevent it running. The site may well also download other "undesireable" stuff too, that that once again isn't viral (i.e. self-spreading) and may not be considered a direct threat and so not removed by AV products.

    Good luck!

    Neil.

... you could always download Stinger, "a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but rather a tool to assist administrators and users when dealing with an infected system. Stinger utilizes next generation scan engine technology, including process scanning, digitally signed DAT files, and scan performance optimizations."

    get it from here:- http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
