Just had a call here are the test pieces for the 2005 Spring Festival

Masquerade - Philip Wilby - Grand Shield
Montage - Peter Graham - Senior Cup

    Great selection of test pieces..

Montage - excellent! Class choice. I'll look forward to that one.

Good year so far, Dances and Arias (Scottish Open), Comedy (Area) and then Montage for Senior Cup. Not one duffer for once!!

They are great choices, seems strange though that Montage is in the Senior Cup when it was one of the Open choices last year. Masquerade will sort out the Shield bands, what a blow!

Great choices. Can't wait to get to grips with Montage.

Am looking forward to the challenge of Masquerade!

I'd rather be playing Montage though cos it's one of my favourites!

Are you absolutely convinced that this is correct? We should expect an offical statement today elsewhere if so.

If it turns out to be official then I think the pieces are great but the choices are poor.

Masquerade was used in 2002 and Montage two months ago. So many pieces are used once then confined to the cupboard. Just seems a shame that although they are terrific pieces, we continue to go back to tried and tested favourites.

Odin, Men and Mountains (granted that the Shield would last about six days with that!), Devil and the Deeo Blue sea, Seid....list is endless of ones that could be used as alternatives.

I spoke with our Competition secetary earlier on. it was in a letter sent out to all competiting bands.
It is usually the 1st week of december when the Grand Shield test is announced.

I suppose you could add Burlesque For Brass Band (used in Euro's 98 ) to that list & many more!

Senior Cup have had some great pieces in the last few years, Journey Into Freedom and now Montage while the Shield
    - 2001 An Epic Symphony
    - 2002 Checkmate
    - 2003 Tallis
    - 2004 Les Preludes
    - 2005 Masquerade

Great choices and great pieces! Well done Spring Festival organisers!!!!

Was there not talk of them starting a 4th competition as there were enough bands on the invite list for Senior Trophy to hold another contest?!?

Even if it meant you were yet another year away from British Open glory (ahhh, we can but dream!!) It would get another load of bands to Blackpool.
Im sure there must be a spare hall in the Winter Gardens somewhere ;-)

That sounds like a feasible idea. There must be loads of bands who would jump at the chance of an invite, even if the Open seems soooooo far away ;)

    The more the merrier!

It's great to see a demand for places for the Open Qualifiers...If I remember there used to be a junior cup at Belle Vue which was part of the Spring Festival Weekend ( the only reason I know this is the Trefor Band from North Wales won it around 1974 ).Maybe this can be incorporated into the weekend ( maybe two sections on sat and 2 on sunday).
Still interesting choices of test pieces for the Spring Festival next year.
