The Shirley Band were absolutely delighted to be back in the prizes at Weston, proving that our decision to recommence our association with Alwyn Green was the right one.

Over the last five months Alwyn's positive approach and fine musicianship (hardly in doubt really) have crafted what we feel to be our best contest performances over the last few years; comparable with the best of those produced by Dave Lea and from an earlier vintage, Bryan Hurdley.

We were pleased with our Area performance of James Cook (though if 4BR are to be believed we were never there), and tMP summed up what we felt about our rendition of Tallis Variations "An excellent performance and is clear through the music that the band enjoyed it" (such a pity that 4BR have seen fit to ignore us again!)

All we need now is a couple more regular cornet players and a tenor trombone, then we can really challenge for honours on a regular basis (how many other bands will have similar thoughts?) and maybe I can get back to my rightful position as the shoveller of the front row.
