Garry Cutt to take SWT Woodfalls at Regional Contest in Torquay The SWT Woodfalls band is delighted to announce that Garry Cutt will once again be conducting the band at this year’s regional contest in March. Garry last fronted the band at the 2002 regionals where they put on a winning performance of Whitsun Wakes. Will he be able to repeat this victory with the band this year? The band has every confidence that he can. The band certainly has a good track record on the contesting scene of late. A particularly notable performance took place at the Scottish Open last November where they came 3rd, beating many reputable Northern bands to a place in the frame. Yet at a more local level recent regional performances have been slightly disappointing; they achieved a 6th placing in 2005 preceded by two 4th places in 2004 and 2003. Woodfalls will be hoping that 2006 will be the year to put them firmly back at the top. The band believes its strengths to be their rich and powerful sound, as well as having strong corner men to cope with the solo passages. They will be working hard on the test piece in these final weeks to further improve control and tighten the ensemble work. “Everyone will play it differently and ours will certainly have our mark on it.” commented band member Simon Persin. When asked to comment on who their main competitors would be on the day Simon Persin said: “The West is really tight at the moment. Any from about 6 or 7 could win on their day, but competition will come from: Polysteel, Mount Charles, Camborne, Bournemouth. Dark Horse: Aldbourne.” In their quest to become this year’s regional champions the band welcomes a new player Sam Atherton on 2nd cornet. Sam is pleased to have formally joined the ranks having previously deputised with the band at the Scottish Open.
