Friary Guildford Brass Band is celebrating 25 years since its formation in 1983. Twenty-five years of commitment and hard work, camaraderie and team work, successful concerts and contests, and happy memories of a wonderful hobby.

Those supporters who have followed the band since the early years will recall that we regularly performed at Friary Meux public houses; when the band was sponsored by the local brewery – a partnership that lasted for ten years.

To mark the occasion, Friary Guildford Brass Band invite you to join us at The Jolly Farmer in Worplesdon on Sunday 25th May from 12 noon for a spot of Brass, some fine Fullers Beer, and a Summer Barbeque. Why The Jolly Farmer? – It’s the band’s favourite place to go for a drink after rehearsals!

For more information visit or drop into the Jolly Farmer ( for a Pint!

Should that not be 'Reformed Guildford Band' ~ if my memory serves me right ~ There was a band called Friary Meux Band which lost it's sponsorship and became Guildford Silver, they in the mid '60's were conducted by Frank Renton and subsequently went from the 4th section to the Championship section in 4 years.

    Hi Dave,

You're half right. There have been 3 incarnations of the band. The first band existed in the early 1900s when the Friary Meux Brewery had its own Brass Band (records show that this band came in the frame at the Finals of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain, alongside Black Dyke Mills band), the second band in the 1950s and 60s (Frank Renton was indeed one of the MDs) and the current band was formed in 1983. The current band was also sponsored by Friary Meux brewery for about 10 years, hence the the name 'Friary' - we kept the name on because most people called us 'Friary Band' rather than 'Guildford Band'.

Hopefully the weather will be good over the band holiday. Either way a good time should be had by all. It would be good to see people there...

Unfortunately because of issues with obtaining an entertainment licence, Friary Guildford Brass Band’s event scheduled for Sunday 25th May 2008 at the Jolly Farmer in Worplesdon has been cancelled. The band would like to thank Fullers and Tara and the team at the Jolly Farmer for the work they put into organising and advertising this event and we hope to be able to further strengthen our relationship with both Fullers and the Jolly Farmer in the future.

The band would also like to thank many of our supporters who expressed an interest in this event – we hope to be announcing some exiting new events in and around Guildford in the near future, including a series of ‘Mini-concerts’. For everyone that was planning on popping down to the band’s local to hear Friary play, I’m sure the Jolly Farmer will still make you very welcome. Alternatively why not sit in the garden with a pint of London Pride, throw a few steaks on the barbeque and put one of our CDs on?! London Pride and steaks are available from your local supermarket; Friary CD is available by emailing or visiting
