Woo never played the piece, but Alderley Edge (the place) is about 10mins from where I live, so I like the piece already!

"On Alderley Edge" is a good piece. However, I thought that, when the English Nationals was set up, the organisers said that they were going to commission new works from new, up and coming composers. This year's commission from Phillip Sparke ("Dances and Alleluias", an excellent piece) was supposedly just to get the ball rolling for the first contest.

    so did I...
It's a slightly surprising, pretty conservative choice. I think Alderley Edge starts atmospherically but is spoiled by over sentimental, repetitive tunes and a corny trom trio. I like Peter Graham's Harrison's Dream and particularly Montage though I suppose these have been done to death fairly recently. I too would have welcomed a new composition

I think Graham´s On An Alderly Edge is an execellent choice... I don´t think it has been used for a contest since Nationals in 1997 and it has high standard just as Journey, Montage and Harrison´s Dream...

You are so very lucky in the UK that you have so many brass band players and huge brass band organisations who can raise funds for commissioning new works.. During my banding time in Denmark (since 1991) our band organisation DAO has commissioned 3 pieces in total.. So we depend on you brits to write music...

    Dosen´t someone need a Danish conductor for that contest ???? :) :) :)
Just pay my travels, give me a bed and food and you´ll have the Dansish version on Peter Parkes..
