AFTER nearly nine years as Musical Director, the United Co-op Yorkshire Brass Band is very sad to announce that John Roberts has stepped down from his podium after a tenure which has witnessed a fantastic relationship between band and conductor.
Said the band’s secretary, Tabby Clegg: “John and the band have had a wonderful relationship over the past nine years and he has been responsible for the band’s success and vision, with some fantastic concerts, CDs and tours to Switzerland and latterly Singapore and New Zealand and some outstanding contest performances, including the First Section National Finals in 1999, the Grand Shield, Brass in the Park and the New Zealand Brass Band Championships.”
“Not only has John been a great Musical Director he is also a true friend to everyone in the band, especially myself, and he will be really missed but will always be part of our very close group of friends. It has been a pleasure to work with John musically and we wish him every success for his future and thank him for all the hard work, commitment and dedication he has put into the band over the past years.”
However, whilst the band is sad to say goodbye to John, it is delighted to announce the appointment of its new Musical Director, Kevin Wadsworth.
Kevin comes to the band with a wealth of experience having been one of the country’s top horn players and one of the finest musicians and adjudicators in the UK.
Welcoming Kevin, Tabby said: “The band is very pleased that Kevin has accepted its invitation to become its new Musical Director. We worked with Kevin earlier this year and everyone was particularly taken with his style, drive and working ethos of work hard but have fun, a policy we try and uphold. There is a real buzz around the band and this will hopefully be the start of another exciting chapter in the band’s history as we already have some fantastic ideas and projects in the pipeline for the next few years.”
“Kevin will officially commence his new post on 26 September once he has fulfilled his commitments with the West Yorkshire Police Band, which he is conducting at the Lower Section National Finals in Harrogate. Everyone at United Co-op Yorkshire Brass Band wishes Kevin and West Yorkshire Police Band every success for their assault on the 2nd Section Championships.”
