    Hi Alan Craig here!

What do you think the brass band movement can do to encourage more youngsters to take up playing?

Do you think that schools are doing enough to encourage people to playin brass bands or do you think we should be doing more ourselves to promote our movement?

    Hi Craig

A good point. We need to get into schools and actively encourage youngsters to play brass instruments.

My father used to regularly visit schools and demonstate instruments hoping to whet the appetite of kids that may want to learn. He then would set-up a learners section at his band perhaps 3 times a year. This kept his band fully flushed of players for many years and many are now playing in top bands across the country.

Kids have so much more on offer nowadays, we have to sell banding as an enjoyable hobby in order to attract them, then keep them interested with fun things to do. Not just in music but as a social organisation. several bands and people have been able to do this and have thriving bands with different levels of standard. We could all do more.
