Dutch National Brass Band Championships test pieces announced

    The Dutch National Brass Band Championships take place at the end of November in Groningen. Today the set test pieces were announced:

    Champions division: Northern Lights - Phlip Wilby
    1st Division: Dances and Arias - Edward Gregson
    2nd Division: At the edge of time - Ray Steadman-Allen
    3rd Division: Celebration - Joop van Dijk
    4th Division: Lydian Pictures - Simon Dobson

    I don't know what the standard of the Dutch 2nd division bands are, but,
    assuming that they are on a par with the British 2nd section, I would have thought that "At the Edge of Time" would be a very difficult piece for them to master.

    I don't know the piece very well (I think it's on Alpha and Omega by YBS?)

    What about Dances and Arias for 1st section?

    A big ask but not completely unrealistic, assuming bands have enough quality shed-builders. Great piece for the percussionists to get their teeth into. Bit of pressure on the solo euph and whoever plays the 2nd flugel part (usually 4th man down I think).
