I was just tidying up my old bookmarks list and I noticed a bookmark for our old website at Out of curiosity and a fit of nostalgia I decided to go have a look only to find a holding page indicating server maintenance. Not recognising the page header I decided to look up the whois database and found that my old name, which I let expire, is now registered to a German company. Ah well, they're welcome to it. Anyone else had their name stolen/parked like this by domain name squatters.

If you let it expire, then technically they didn't steal it.

There are many, many domain name speculators out there. Typically, they look for domain names that are just about to expire, then immediately register them to themselves as soon as the expiration happens. If the original owner comes along and wants the domain, they then have to negotiate a price to buy it back.

Nothing illegal about this, but it's not exactly polite.

Moral: Don't let your domain name expire if you think you might ever want to use it again!
