On the 16th September 2012, Iwan Williams lost his brave fight against brain cancer, aged 39. Iwan was born in the rural village of Deiniolen, a village that nests in the mountains of Snowdonia, North Wales. Whilst at the village’s Primary School, Iwan became a member of the Deiniolen Silver Band – and throughout his life he maintained a close relationship with the Band. The Deiniolen Silver Band have always been immensely proud to have seen Iwan‘s career blossom from our Youth Band, through the Senior Band, County and National Bands to be such a huge success on the international stage – and throughout his short but hugely inspirational life, Iwan was always there to share his experiences, his talent and teaching, and was always proud to say that it all started for him in this small village in North Wales.

Because Iwan was such an inspiration to us all at Deiniolen, the Band have decided to set up an annual Scolarship in his memory – a scholarship which will provide financial help towards a number of brass lessons for 12 months for an individual, or a collective – thereby ensuring, through Iwan’s legacy, that other youngsters can benefit from expert tuition at the start of their promising brass-playing careers.

To start the fundraising for this very special Scholarship, Iwan’s close friends from their days at school and banding days, Dylan Cole-Jones, Carwyn Price and Dylan Williams, will undertake a gruelling 30-mile sponsored walk – a walk that will incorporate a walk up Wales’ highest mountain, Snowdon! The walk is to take place on Saturday August 10th 2013 and will commence at 2.00am from the beach at Dinas Dinlle – a place that was very close to Iwan’s heart, on to Llanberis and up Snowdon, finishing at Deiniolen via the Llanberis Slate Quarry – another location that Iwan always made sure to visit with his wife Lorraine and son Owen, whenever he came home to Wales.

These 3 core walkers will be joined at various stages of the walk by other members of Iwan’s family and friends, and it is planned that members of the Deiniolen Silver Band will undertake the trek up Snowdon, along with their instruments, and will perform a short concert at the summit, before setting off on the last leg of the walk to the band room (‘Hen Felin’) at Deiniolen.
The proceeds of this special walk will be split 50/50 – with half going to give the Iwan Williams Scholarship a financial start, and the other half going towards the Trust Fund that was set up in Iwan’s memory, for his young son, Owen, aged 7.

Further details of how to apply for the Scholarship will be announced later this year, but in the meantime, should you wish to sponsor the walkers, please do so by following this link: or should you wish to register your interest in setting up an annual payment towards the fund, please contact Mr Meirion Jones, Secretary of the Band on 01286 870452.
