Over 12 months have passed since the flugel player, Iwan Williams, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour, and now his friends at the Deiniolen Band, along with the people of Deiniolen, have decided to arrange a special concert to aid and support him.

Iwan grew up in the village of Deiniolen in Snowdonia, North Wales, and started playing the cornet in the village band at the age of 8, winning his first solo contest, the North Wales Solos contest, by the age of 11. By the age of 16 he had added a number of soloist prizes to his name, both locally and nationally, and he had also become a member of the National Youth Brass of Wales. Iwan’s musical career developed further when he moved to Manchester to study at the University of Salford to study under, amongst others, Professor David King, (the man responsible for Iwan’s move on to the flugel horn) a career that reached its peak when, in 2005, Iwan released his first solo CD, ‘Mellow Moments’ to great acclaim. At that time Iwan was a music teacher by profession and a member of the highly successful band, the YBS Band.

In January 2006, Iwan began to feel unwell and, after an initial diagnosis of epilepsy, further tests revealed a tumour. Iwan is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment for the cancer, and as a result has been unable to work since the diagnosis and has also been unable to play his instrument.

Iwan’s friends in the Deiniolen Band decided to host an evening of light entertainment to honour and support him in this difficult time.

“When we first heard of Iwan’s diagnosis, we were extremely shocked and saddened, but have been encouraged by Iwan’s show of strength and courage throughout his treatment.” Said Dylan Williams, on behalf of the band. “We feel that the time is right to stage an event like this, a very special evening, not only to provide some financial aid to Iwan and his young family, but to show the band and the village’s support to them all in what is bound to be a difficult time. Everyone connected with the Deiniolen Band are proud to be given the chance to show our support to Iwan and his family.”

The concert will take place at Theatr Seilo, Caernarfon on Saturday 6th October 2007, commencing at 7pm. Alongside the band, the evening’s entertainment will be provided by Tudur Owen (star of S4C’s Noson Lawen) as compere, Sheona White, Stuart Lingard and Gavin Saynor will be guest brass soloists (all 3 of whom were members of the YBS Band with Iwan), and the popular talents of Annette Bryn Parri (piano), John Eifion Jones (tenor), Sian Wyn Gibson (contralto) and Emyr Wyn Gibson (actor and singer). Iwan’s former tutor at Salford and former conductor at YBS, Professor David King, will also be in attendance.

Tickets are priced at £10 for adults and £5 for children and are available from the band’s secretary, Mr. Meirion Jones, on 01286 870452.

The concert is sponsored by Advent Project Management Ltd, and a huge number of local businesses have also agreed to support the event. World of Brass, the company behind Iwan’s solo CD, have also generously agreed to support the appeal.

Dylan continues “The evening promises to be very special, and the band are extremely grateful to all the artists and sponsors for agreeing to support the appeal. There is something really special about the way the people of Deiniolen pull together in difficult times, and this concert is proof of that. However, we wish the evening to have much wider support, so anyone who may wish to support the appeal are welcome to contact me on dyl_73@hotmail.com or by calling the band’s secretary on the number given above.”

Further details will be available in due course at http://www.deiniolenband.org.uk and http://www.adventpm.co.uk

    The best sound in Banding

Can I just pass on my thoughts and best wishes to the Deiniolen Band and Iwan.

He does, and in my humble opinion, will always have, the best Flugel sound in banding.

I know he will be back soon kicking ass,

    Take care mate,

Apologies for the lateness in updating this, was waiting for the photos!

On Saturday 6th October, a very special concert was held at Theatr Seilo, Caernarfon – a concert that was arranged by the Deiniolen Band to honour and support one of their ex-members, Iwan Williams. Iwan grew up in Deiniolen and started playing the cornet in the village band at the age of 8. Iwan’s musical career developed further when he moved to Manchester to study at the University of Salford to, a career that reached its peak when, in 2005, Iwan released his first solo CD, ‘Mellow Moments’ to great acclaim.

“The aim of the concert was not only to provide a financial contribution to Iwan, but to express our support and encouragement to him and his young family at a difficult time – and we are extremely proud to say that these aims were successfully met. The evening, and the appeal as a whole, has been a tremendous success.”

The concert was sponsored by Advent Project Management, and the programme was sponsored by a number of business based in, and connected with, Deiniolen. The majority of the artistes had strong connections with Deiniolen – and this contributed to the close, homely, atmosphere created in the theatre.

Special thanks also to World of Brass for their generous donation of copies of Iwan's CD. 'Mellow Moments', to be sold on the night with all proceeds going towards the appeal.

Amongst those from outside the area taking part were two people who were members with Iwan at the YBS Band – Sheona White from Scotland and her husband, Stuart Lingard, from Manchester. Both are among the top soloists in the country on their chosen instruments, and it was a pleasure to hear them perform in Caernarfon.

Before the concert, the band were honoured to be given the opportunity to rehearse and perform under the tuition of the Professor David King – Iwan’s former tutor at Salford and former principal conductor of the YBS Band. Professor King is recognised as being one of the most influential people in the brass band world today, and it was a pleasure to work with him and to hear him pay tribute to Iwan during the concert, and present him with a Yamaha flugel horn – the very same flugel horn which Iwan had been performing on so magnificently on for the last few years.

It is true to say that Professor King was touched by the way the evening took place to support Iwan, and sent the following message:

The other artistes taking part in the concert were the excellent compere Tudur Owen, bringing a touch of light-hearted humour to the proceedings, Sian Gibson and her brother Emyr (who has recently released his CD with his band titled ‘Hei Ti’) , the tenor voice of John Eifion Jones and the world-class piano talent of Annette Bryn Parri – all of these are not only popular local talents, but are well-known throughout Wales and are talents we can all be extremely proud of. The band was conducted on the night by Gavin Saynor, and Gavin himself treated the audience to a solo spot on the tuba!

Tickets for the concert sold out within days of going on sale, and it’s fair to say that everyone present on the evening were given a treat of the highest nature – and no doubt Iwan himself was given a night to remember.

Dylan Williams and Meirion Jones, not only on behalf of the Band, but also on behalf of Iwan and his family, wish to thank everyone who supported the concert – the sponsors, the artistes, the audience, and the huge number of well-wishers who contributed towards the appeal. It is great pleasure seeing such a close-knit community pull together to support those going through difficult times.

We would also like to wish Iwan the best in his continuing fight against his illness, we are all behind you mate.
