Enquiries are invited from bands wishing to participate in the inaugural contest at the Cortonwood Mining Memorial Gardens on Sunday, 13[SUP]th[/SUP] July 2014.

The contest is open to 1[SUP]st [/SUP]/ 2[SUP]nd [/SUP]/ 3[SUP]rd [/SUP]/ 4[SUP]th[/SUP] Section National Grading and Youth/unregistered bands and the format is a 20 minute entertainment programme.

Contest entry will be limited to twelve bands and will be pre-drawn to allow bands to plan their day. Contest will commence at 11 a.m. and bands will play in a marquee large enough for band and audience to allow for inclement weather.

The Elsecar Heritage Railway is extending their line to terminate at the old Cortonwood Colliery site. At the Cortonwood Colliery Station they will create a memorial park, play area and heritage archive to commemorate all the collieries no longer in existence. 2014 is the 30[SUP]th[/SUP] Anniversary of the Miners Strike which actually started at Cortonwood Colliery.

The band event will play an important part in marking the opening of this site. The site is located by the side of Cortonwood Retail Park on the A6195, Dearne Valley Parkway, near Barnsley.

Please contact Peggy Tomlinson, Contest Administrator for further details, entry form etc. Tel: 0114 2468102 or email:

I look forward to hearing from you. :D

Please get in touch if you are interested in entering and thank you to bands who have already contacted me for details. You are urged to send in your entry form as soon as possible. The closing date is only 3 weeks away.

    Cortonwood Brass Festival – Cancelled.

Would potential visitors to the Cortonwood Mining Memorial Brass Festival on the 13[SUP]th[/SUP] July please note that the event had to be cancelled. Unfortunately bad weather earlier in the year delayed the work schedule by 4 weeks and it became impossible to complete the work on site in time for the festival.

Thank you to all the bands that entered and also to Barnsley Brass who were to steward the event.

The Elsecar Heritage Railway plan to run the event again in 2015 when the site will be completed and established as a fitting memorial to all our local pits that have now closed.
Details will be published and we look forward to welcoming you there.
