Composing - help please

    hi all
    i am planning to write a duet for 2 cornets for my girlfriend and myself.
    any tips / advice would be greatly appreciated :)

    1) Make sure that you share the melody between the two parts to make it more interesting.
    2) Write within a range that you're both comfortable with.

    When writing for a specific player or players, make sure you allow them to play to their strengths. So if one of your players has a good top end and loves the squeaky stuff, make sure there's plenty of that in. Likewise, if one always warms up with silly loud pedal Cs, give them a chance to show that off!

    Also try and find something that suits the character of the players. I'm sure that's a big part of the reason Sandy Smith arranged "Another fine mess" for the two players he did. You'll know better than I will what that character is.
