Can anyone tell me the best way to clean frosted silver plate instruments. I wish to clean a 1970's Imperial bass that although the finish is quite tarnished where it has been out of its case for quite a while the frosting is still very good. Any suggestions please?

This finish was always difficult to keep really clean.
A silver cloth is probably your best bet - Goddards is the "standard" make. Where the tarnish is heavy a light application of water (spray) as you polish will help.
The plate on these older instruments was normally pretty thick and should easily withstand a drop of Brasso on the most stubborn areas.

I hated the frosted finish on my bass when I was in my teens. It was hard to clean and got dirty more easily than the bright silver ones. However, I do not recommend my method of cleaning it, which was a combination of silvo and a very fine wire wool. I kid you not. There were times in my youth when I was really stupid.
