BBC Winds’ Euphonium soloist Charley Brighton celebrates his 40th. year of euphonium playing this month with another recital at St. Mary’s, Slough on May 6th.

The Willson sponsored artist will be performing 3 premieres of new works for the instrument, the Concertante for Euphonium and piano by Terry Treherne, the first performance of movement 2 of American Ken Friedrich’s amazing new Concerto for Euphonium, and 2 variations on the Londonderry Air for unaccompanied Euphonium by Slough composer and bassist, Tony Osborne.

Both Terry and Tony will be present to hear the renditions and Malcolm Stowell will be at the piano.

The remaining pieces are a long forgotten work originally for trumpet & piano, Preludio, Arie e Scherzo by Ennio Porrino and Charley’s own adaption of ‘Valse’ by Francis Poulenc, originally for piano solo.

Some half dozen vintage euphoniums from Charley’s collection will be on display, and three will be used in the recital, alongside the Willson 2900 Euphonium. A Hawkes & Son ‘Dictor’ 4 valve, a
Boosey & Co. Solbron 3 valve and a Highams 4 valve ‘Contesting Model’.

Charley learnt to play in the Longford School Brass Band in Feltham, Middlesex and played with the Richmond (Watney), Hanwell, Sun Life, John Laing Hendon, Aldershot and Staines bands.
He is currently soloist with the BBC Winds based at London’s Maida Vale Studios, the Buckinghamshire Symphonic Winds (High Wycombe) and the newly formed City of London Symphonic Winds, based in Covent Garden.

The recital is free (though donations to the Church are always gratefully received) and starts at 12 noon. There is also free parking provided for the concert, courtesy of Keywest Ltd. opposite Slough Police Station.

    Refreshments are served afterwards.
