Band Members of the Abraham Darby Specialist School for the Performing Arts, Madeley, Telford are entering the final phase of a busy period of rehearsals in preparation for a number of National and International Contests and Festivals which are taking place in July.

On the 3rd July the School’s Showband will travel to Basingstoke to participate in the London International Wind Band Festival where they will play alongside a number of international bands from America and Europe. This is the first time that the School’s Showband have been to this Festival, which is organised in conjunction with World Music Tours and the National Concert Band Festival and follows from an invitation given to the school following the awarding of the Showband’s sixth consecutive National Gold Award at the NCBF National Festival, which had taken place at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester earlier in the year.

Then on the 5th July they then head off on the first overseas trip when they travel to Zurich, Switzerland to take part in the World Youth Music Festival where they will compete against a large field of international bands in the second class of the Wind Orchestra Division with 21 other youth bands worldwide from South America, Europe and Asia. The School’s Senior Brass Band have also been invited to take part in the second class of the Brass Band division. This is the first time that the school has entered this particular Festival.

On their return from Switzerland the School will have an overwhelming presence at the National Festival for Music for Youth, which this year is being held in Birmingham – the Showband, Jazz Band, Brass Band, Senior Woodwind Band and the smaller Brass Group are all participating at this year’s event – which is the eighth consecutive year that the school has attended this prestigious national event. The various bands have returned from this Festival in previous years with an array of Outstanding Performance Awards and Highly Commended awards, with the Showband being awarded three Outstanding Performance Awards in successive years and four overall in the last five years. The Jazz Band have also achieved a double of Outstanding Performance Awards in previous years.

Finally, the long and exhaustive schedule of trips is completed with the Showband travelling to Kekrade, Holland to take part in the World Music Contest where they will compete in the second division of the Harmony Orchestra Class against a large number of adult bands from Europe, the Americas and the Far East. In 2001 the School attended this Festival for the first time where they were awarded a Gold Medal in the same division.

Christine Brown, the School’s Headteacher said “that the music staff and all the band members have worked extremely hard and they are looking forward to participating at these various Festivals in July, and I am certain that they will be excellent ambassadors for both the school and the Borough of Telford & Wrekin. I would also like to record my thanks for the unstinting support and financial assistance that the Supporters of Music at Abraham Darby School give to them and the school which enables them to have the opportunity of taking part in these Festivals.”
