With the Festive Season behind them, Banbury Cross Players' thoughts turn to flugelhorns and coal mines as rehearsals get underway for their Spring production at The Mill Theatre, Banbury, BRASSED OFF. Director, CLARE LESTER, has taken Paul Allen’s adaptation of Mark Herman’s screenplay, added a very experienced cast and begun the journey to the Northern mining town of Grimley.

Alongside Clare and her cast, BCP are thrilled to welcome HOOK NORTON BRASS BAND to the Production. The band are delighted to be involved in the show and exude enthusiasm at every turn - providing instruments, music stands and blazers as well as tuition to the actors whose characters are in the Colliery Band.

It’s 1992 and the miners of Grimley face an uncertain future as their pit is under threat of closure. Worse still, the Colliery Band is on the verge of break up. With the threat of redundancy and future unemployment, the band members can no longer match leader Danny’s unshakeable dedication - until Gloria arrives, that is.

As the only female member of the band, she rekindles their enthusiasm for the forthcoming National Championships, as well as rekindling a childhood romance with Andy. With the “Nationals” at the Albert Hall looming, can they all hold it together and secure a famous victory for Grimley?

As well as being taught how to ‘mime’ playing brass instruments, another challenge facing the cast has been the accent which they have all mastered with ease – including a profanity or two not in the original script! And Director, Clare, tells us the casting for whose bottoms should appear in the pit shower scene was one of the most difficult of her career to date!

This is a unique theatrical experience, spectacularly staged with a pit head looming under the lights. Demand for tickets is already very high – so book now to avoid disappointment!
