Brass for Africa – A Musical Spectacular

On Saturday 28th November, many of the brass band movement’s biggest names will be coming together for ‘Brass for Africa – A Musical Spectacular’. The event, sponsored by Rath Trombones, will be held at The Salvation Army in Kettering and will essentially comprise of two segments – firstly a brass masterclass at 12pm given by David Childs and Owen Farr (sponsored by York Brass Instruments), followed by a concert at 7.30pm.

The concert brings together the Brass Band Aid Celebrity Band, an all-star band featuring many of the finest players across the UK, from bands such as Black Dyke, Cory, Foden’s, Grimethorpe and The International Staff Band amongst others. This will be the fourth time the band has come together, and will on this occasion be conducted by Dr. Robert Childs. Also starring will be guest soloists Philip Cobb (trumpet), Owen Farr (tenor horn), Brett Baker (trombone), David Childs (euphonium) and Les Neish (tuba). They will be joined by ITV’s ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ singing sensation Charlie Green (sponsored by Reliance Bank), who shot to fame in the 2008 series of the show.

The brass masterclass is open to players of all ages and abilities, and David Childs and Owen Farr will be demonstrating a range of brass techniques as well as answering any questions people may have. Participants are welcome to bring instruments as there will be opportunity to play as a group, and anyone who wishes to play a solo as part of the masterclass will be able to do so. The session will finish with a short recital from the duo.

The event is helping to raise money for the 'Zambia Journey Appeal'. A group of mainly young people from The Salvation Army at Kettering will be travelling to Zambia next Easter and during their time their will be overseeing a number of worthwhile projects, including AIDS, Orphans and Water Sanitation. They will also be helping to lead a music school there and will be taking out a number of brass instruments to donate.
