Newtongrange Silver Band this weekend (9 to 11 September 2011) hosts the 15[SUP]th[/SUP] annual festival of music within the grounds of the National Mining Museum of Scotland in Newtongrange.

The weekend starts with a Gala Concert by the host band, under the baton of Nigel Boddice MBE, in Newbattle High School on Friday at 7.30pm, and promises to include a wide range of music to suit all tastes.

Saturday sees the staging of the contests which have always been popular with the competing bands, being held in a less formal atmosphere than most contests on the calendar.
This year 18 bands are competing in the “Senior” March and Hymn Tune Contest, with a good spread of entries from all Sections, including a youth band. The growth of the youth brass bands in Scotland is reflected in the encouraging entry of 20 bands to the Youth Contests, ranging from the Preparatory Section up to the Premier Section.

Sunday’s entertainment spreads beyond brass bands to include music from Jazz, Ceilidh and Pipe bands, as well as an Accordian Orchestra.
The Annual “Praise in Brass” hymn concert is presented by Newtongrange Silver Band, and the weekend is rounded off with the Grand Finale presented by the host band, including massed items with the Lothian & Borders Police Pipes and Drums.
