    Hi All,

Not sure if this has been done before but just wondered what everyones opinion was, I've been listening to my ipod recently and looking at the regionals cd and I have to say that in recent years the best year for me was 2004.

    Coventry Variations
    Tristan Encounters

What a fantastic selection, I'm lovin it, what's everyone elses thoughts?
I'm not saying these are my favourite pieces but when looking at all five pieces chosen this is the best selection IMHO.

I think 1994 was quite a special year for test-pieces (and the Polyphonic recording BNFL and Richard Evans made of them was excellent as well) ....

    1. Chorale & Toccata (Stephen Bulla)
    2. The Journeymen (Ray Steadman-Allen)
    3. A Salford Sinfonietta (Darrol Barry)
    4. Sinfonia For Brass, Op. 85 'Maoriana' (Arthur Butterworth)
    5. Partita (Philip Sparke)

I really liked the year of Ballet for Band, Royal Parks and Passacaglia in First Section!! Still getttiNg grips with the '6's' in the Wayfarer!!

I have to agree 2004 was for a good selection though it the first time i had sampled the whole area experience and really loved Tristan Encounters, though personnally 2006 and was a great selection across the board all challenging yet playable and audience friendly as well !

I'd say 2005, purely for getting to play Vaughan Williams' Variations in the second section.

Rock hard piece, but a great bit of music.

After contesting in both the 4th, 2nd and now 1st sections over the past 6 years it was great to come across something that was genuinely challenging BUT enjoyable to play at the same time.

I did find myself humming the Wayfarer on the way home from band on monday night though.... disturbing!

    Quite a good year that...

    But I'll go with 2005.

Rienzi, Comedy, RVW, Tam O Shanter,'er got tired of hearing them that year (any of them)

I think your selection is somewhat clouded by your result ;)

    ( I'll be honest SJ&M wasn't a favorite of mine.)

Suppose it takes all sorts. Can't stand it. Was given as a sample at one of my bands when the band were deciding whether to start contesting. We didn't.

ive had to vote for 2003 as we quailified for the 1st section national finals on Passagalica from the midland area:
What a brilliant piece to play and just really tested the bands to the hilt that year.
But this year 2007 Wayfarer is a real cracker yet another brilliant piece for us 1st section bands:clap: should have been picked some time ago
