Within our organisation we have a training band which has been growing (currently around 17 players of all ages) and is going from strength to strength. I have been approached by the conductor to look into some contests in the area that would be appropriate for the band to enter. Bearing in mind of course this is a training band and many have not played for very long and are of up to say Grade 2/3 standard.

The band is the Hook Norton Training Brass Band and although maintains strong links with Hook Norton itself the practices are held in Banbury, Oxfordshire. The local organisation, the Oxford and District Brass Band association do have a festival with a number of categories however the band was unable to enter since it would involve splitting the band up into two smaller groups.

Any age restictions on a category are a problem and also if numbers are limited.

Can anyone suggest any contests in the area that may be suitable or contacts for people that may be able to point us in the right direction.

I have already suggested to the conductor that we go to the ODBBA and see if they will add another category to their annual contest.

    Any suggestions welcome. Thanks.

why not look at some of your local music festivals? Normal there are solo and duet calsses for most instruments but a lot of them have an ensemble class. The rules are usually much more relaxed than a normal contest regarding number of players, instrumentation etc.
