Brighouse & Rastrick Band – Open Day

Our busy 125th Anniversary year peaks this Saturday, 8th July, when we’re holding a very public celebration.

We are hosting an ‘Open Day’ from 10:00am until 3:00pm on Saturday, when anyone and everyone is welcome to call in and look around the our purpose-built Finkil Street headquarters. It’s a fantastic chance to see what we’re all about, as well as meeting the players and officials. The Mayor of Calderdale, Colin Stout, will officially open the day at 10:00am.

Our headquarters, named “West Ridings” after our signature tune, was opened in 1995, and has really proved its worth. The low-maintenance, purpose-built facility has a large rehearsal room, music library, uniform/instrument store, committee room and recording room, as well as providing easy access for people, their cars and coach transport. These features have led to many visitors commenting that we are fortunate enough to have ‘one of the best in the country’ in terms of our facilities.

As well as seeing our headquarters in all it’s glory, (we’ve been cleaning it for what seems like weeks!!!), we’ll have lots of items of interest on display for visitors to see. Photographs from back in the 1800’s to the present will be on display, along with memorabilia collected or donated over the years. An array of medals and trophies will also be on display, some for the very first time on special loan, just for the day, from former players. It will also be a chance to see, and even try on, the famous ‘purple and gold’ uniforms that are synonymous with B&R !!

Players and officials from the band will be on hand to walk visitors through the exhibits – and answer any questions you may have. In addition, members of the band will perform music intermittently throughout the day, and light refreshments will be available throughout the day.

The Open Day is an event which means a great deal to us, and has been months in the planning. As a Public Subscription band – our doors are always open during rehearsals, to any band enthusiasts to come and listen to us. However, this is an opportunity to actually have a guided tour of our home, as well as seeing memorabilia from throughout our history. We’d love as many of the friends and visitors from other bands, or just band enthusiasts, to come and see what we’re all about. We owe so much to the support of our patrons and members of the public, and we’re looking forward to meeting as many people as possible on Saturday.

As well as welcoming all Saturday’s visitors, we are also hosting visits from many schools from throughout our local area over the coming weeks. Where transport makes this difficult to arrange, members of the band are taking presentations into various schools to meet youngsters and let them see what Brighouse & Rastrick Band are all about. If anyone is interested in something similar for their own school, contact us (via our website www.brighouseandrastrickband.co.uk or by replying on this forum) and we’ll be happy to put the necessary plans in place.

Visitors on Saturday itself will inevitably include former players from around the country who will form part of the 250 or so guests that will be attending the band’s Celebration Dinner to be held the same evening at the Cedar Court Hotel, Huddersfield. This will allow us to let our hair down after a busy couple of weeks, and who knows – maybe have a pint or two!

If anyone has any queries – please feel free to e-mail me or reply to this thread.
