    Hi All

A friend of mine has an old, good condition, wooden B&H Clarinet and we need to establish the manufacture date for it. We have the serial number of course, and I am aware there is a database for establishing the dates of manufacture for brass instruments, does anyone know if a similar database exists for Woodwind instruments...?

Nice one Neal, thanks for this.

OK, so it's about 42 years old and dates from around 1966. Any ideas how I now put a value on it...?

You may have found in your research that the instrument manufacture arm of Boosey & Hawkes was sold to various companies in 2003. Buffet Crampon took over the clarinet and brass manufacture.

According to the Buffet website, the UK contacts are Lyndon Chapman ( and Tim Barrett ( - it may be worth contacting one of them? Otherwise you could try somewhere like Norman's or John Packer, perhaps some of their specialists could advise you.

Is it in Bb or A?

Errrm.... how do I tell Dave... ? :):) I have it with me, but the friend is not here to advise me of that!

I have a feeling that it says on the body somewhere either 'Bb' or 'A'. Failing that, I'd find a friendly clarinet player, and ask them to blow it...

Chances are it's a Bb if it's on its own, but an A of that provenance might be of interest to complete a matched Bb/A set.

Another bit of information required to help price it is knowing which model it is. Any idea John?

Hi Andy - the owner says it is a Bb Calrinet
Tom, it's an Emperor 1966 model, equivalent to the current E1 apparently.

Oops... very sorry Dave. I have absolutely no idea why I wrote Andy and not Dave... so I plead age related temporary insanity...:)

No worries... Andrew is my second middle name, anyhow...
