It has been reported to 4BR that Arfon Owen, the solo horn of Black Dyke, has decided to relinquish his position with immediate effect.

Now with a vacant seat who is in the running to take over?

Rumours are of an ex principal horn of the band, and with Sheona White only recently joing Fodens, could she be tempted by the money?

    What do you think?

Well if the rumour is that it is a former principal horn, then the following must be in the frame.

    Lesley Howie
    Martin Armstrong
    Sandy Smith (my guess)

or current big hitters in the frame

    Sheona White
    Kate Eggleshaw

Sure there's loads more. Never the less it will be a big job to do it. Good luck to whoever.

    I guessed Sandy too!
  4. It would be great to see Sandy Smith returning to playing at this level, he put in so many memorable performances for Dyke, then Fairey then Grimey.

Class act, as good as, if not better than, anyone.

I think Leah Williams would be fantastic for the job. Fantastic sound, amazing technique and one of the best brass band musicians I have ever come across.

Just as good as the boys, if not better!

    sandy smith for sure!
  8. Or perhaps the return of the one and only Billy Rushworth.
(Listen to his CD for a lesson in how to deal with Mendelsshons Violin Concerto....)

They've had a few good players at Dyke in their time!

I'm tempted! ;) It's going to be an interesting choice for the band though. There are a few suitable candidates for the position and I suppose it depends on who can commit to their busy schedule!

Is Leslie still at Leyland ??? I didnĀ“t see her at the RAH 3 weeks ago... Why did she leave Leyland ?? Pragnant ??? I think she is coming back to Dyke...

She did a great job when she was there.. The right sound, secure playing.. Lloyal for many years...

My biggest concern is the sop seat... Dyke must get Michelle Ibbotson back... She is the greatest sop player in the game..
  18. Get Kevin Crockford and Sandy Smith back into Black Dyke and I can see the band being even more dominent than they have been in the last few years. Both players are at the very top of their game at the moment

Agree with kevin being at the top of his game at the moment. Haven't heard Sandy for a while. Is he?

I can see Lesley Howie getting the chair, good enough, on top of her game, and able to commit. Also for Yorkshire youth band purposes, she would be able to tutor the horns as well as arfon and Doyley.
