LAST Saturday (23 July) the United Co-op Yorkshire Brass Band gave another world premiere when it performed Phil Lawrence’s work A Long Ride in a Static Machine.
Based on his late father’s antics around the M25 Orbital, the intricate ‘tone poem’ depicts a long and frustrating journey on the M25 complete with car horns, diggers and police cars!
The work received a rapturous applause from the 600 strong audience at the concert in the grounds of English Heritage’s Bolsover Castle in Derbyshire.
Said Band Manager Tabby Clegg: “The music was such fun, despite the hard work that went into preparation and it is a real privilege to perform Phil’s music, especially works such as this when Phil’s own sense of humour and character are really depicted in the music! The band is already working on some other music by Phil who, in my opinion, is one of the finest composers around today writing for brass.”
