As my 1000th post I've decided to do something a bit soppy and far too serious for this section.

Having spent nearly 2 years on tMP, and spent about 20 years of my life in and around bands I’ve made the following conclusions about brass banders: It’s in no particular order and I make no claims about any conclusions that may be drawn.

:) Party Animals On the whole we work hard and party harder. Host towns of contests must rub their hands with glee when they know there’s going to be a bunch of banders in town for the weekend. However, serious violence - verbal and physical - seems to be extremely rare. We can drink ourselves to a standstill without the need to push other peoples noses out their ears.

:)Generous to a fault. A bander will always buy another bander a drink, pour him into a taxi, share a music stand.

:)Caring. Banders really do care about one another. You can generally rely on your band mates to pick you up and dust you off after you have (metaphorically) fallen off the stage. If you fall off the stage for real they will **** themselves laughing first.

:)Oddly devout. Whilst outwardly scorning the trappings of organised religion (i.e. the 10 Commandments etc…) banders will cheerfully attend all kinds of services, and will send many a prayer winging its way upward for a fellow bander in trouble.

:)Terminal Complainers. I’ve heard more complaints in the bandroom than anywhere else, and I used to work in the complaints department of a large food manufacturer. We enjoy it, don’t try and stop us.

:)Inclusive. With one or two notable exceptions, how many other leisure activities can claim such a wide ranges of ages, abilities, genders, creeds and IQs? Banders don’t seem to care about such things; so long as someone can play, they’re OK. If they can’t play but have comedy value they’re OK. If they can’t play and have no comedy value but can drink the rest of the band under the table, they’re OK. If they can do none of those things they’re probably a secret woodwind player.

:)Humorous. Banders tend to have a well-developed, if somewhat robust, sense of humour. Python, Pratchett, Blackadder and Goodies references form the cornerstone of most late night post-band pub sesh. Practical jokes are the backbone of bands and the sight of the conductor turning round to address the audience only for the rest of the band to realise she’s had her skirt tucked in her knickers all through the first piece, is enough to reduce the strongest men to tears.

:)Well-Read. I’m always astonished by the sheer breadth and depth of reading matter and specialist knowledge discussed on tMP. Is there any subject on which there isn’t at least one full paid-up BOC lurking in Random Chat and Off Topic?

There must be more things but these are the ones that have struck me the most. Thank you luvvies, you've been the most marvellous audience, I love you all (especially the basses) On to the next 1000 posts.

Congratulations on your 1000th post, starting a commemorative thread is so much better than missing such a milestone with a reply somewhere.

I loved all of your comments, your dead right (as usual) especially bout the basses, we all love BMB.

    Keep up the good work
