The Music Company (UK) Ltd, the professional publishing house whose launch was recently reported in the banding press, are delighted to announce that Andrew Duncan has joined them as their Editorial Director.

Andrew is renowned throughout the music industry for his virtuosi tuba playing (previously with the Hallé Orchestra), his successful conducting career (including Whitburn Band on their 2nd placing at the British Open) and his wide selection of works as a composer and arranger (represented by a collection of publishers including Warner/IMP, Faber, North Music Holland, Crabtree Music and Lewis Music Press).

Andrew will be providing the musical expertise and editorial input for The Music Company, whilst the co-owner, Clair Tomalin, will be managing the business aspects of the organisation.

“I am overjoyed that Andrew is joining the team. His broad experience both in music and business will be such an asset to the company and of great support to the writers we represent.

I fully believe that the combination of our skill-sets promises to build The Music Company into a mainstream publishing house. Our new preview catalogue will be available in April and Andrew is already making huge progress with the evolution of some new ideas that we look forward to launching in due course.

Andrew brings to the company a rare combination of experience, and the drive and enthusiasm he has for the development of the company is evidence enough for a successful future.” commented Clair Tomalin, Business Director.

It has already been a positive beginning for The Music Company, with their publishing of Elaine Agnew’s ‘Little Christmas’, one of the set test pieces for the forthcoming European Brass Band Championships 2006. In addition, they have continued to embrace the work of Brass Band Aid; following their production of African Funk by Alan Fernie (donated to BBA to assist with their fund-raising), they have now pledged their services to publish and distribute the original works that are being composed for the charity’s Celebrity Composer’s CD project. They are also bringing publishing into the 21st Century with the development of online access to their music, catalogue and writer information.

With names such as Philip Harper, Alan Morrison, Keith Wilkinson, David Stowell and Gareth Green, together with Andrew Duncan’s own contributions, The Music Company promises to bring some exciting and interesting new offerings to the marketplace. Its enthusiasm to support new and lesser-known writers is also of paramount importance to its Directors, and their forthcoming Preview Catalogue will provide an introduction to some of these notable musicians. To highlight this commitment to new writers further, The Music Company (UK) Ltd are offering a special “Player’s Choice Award” at the European Composer’s Competition to be held in Belfast on the evening of Thursday 27 April 2006.

It is also interesting to note that they will be catering for a cross section of instrumentations and genres, not only the world of brass music. This is always an encouraging sight, as it identifies a strength of multi-disciplined experience, and a general awareness of the live music industry as a whole.

With Andrew’s new role in the organisation, it is a certainty that one of the fundamental strengths of this publishing house will be its determination to offer high quality musical works. This criterion is then well supported by its impressive presentation of the sheet music and scores.

The Music Company is definitely a name to note, and with Andrew Duncan’s new association with the organisation, it will be easy to remember why.
