What advice can you give to todays talented teenagers in the brass band movement who would like to find a career in music and brass bands?

It is near on impossible to make a living solely from brass bands. The very few bands that are able to pay players are fast diminishing and generally rely on short-term insecure sponsorship deals.

The wider music spectrum needs to be explored to make a living in music. The really talented players should go down the pro lines of orchestral playing or jazz etc but again the profession is much smaller than it used to be and good jobs are becoming harder to come by.

Without doubt, fall-back options are required. Research, production, admin, arts, recording, technical aspects can all be career options as well as teaching of course, so to answer your question - the most important thing to have is a plan B because many excellent players that are more than good enough to succeed, never actually get the chance to!
