5 nearest contesting bands

  1. hey ladies gentlemen boys and girls

Im in an area where if i was to go about 12-15 miles east of my hometown, Id be in brass band land as theres loads of bands in that area, but in terms of distance roughly, who are the 5 closest bands to where you are. the rule is if you live near a border like i do, then it has to be 5 bands from the regional contest that your home town would be in, so mine would be yorkshire as i live in hebden bridge.

    CHAMP. - BLACK DYKE
    1ST. - HEBDEN BRIDGE
    2ND. - SLAITWAITE
    3RD. - ELLAND
    4TH. - FRIENDLY

Im fairly sure this is correct although it would have to be measured for a totally accurate list.

1st Section: Langley(If have not got promoted to Champ in 2006)
2nd Section cant think of one/none fall into that 15 mile radius
    3rd Section "" "" "" ""? " " " " " " ""
    4th Section Amington

Quite a brass band drought round here, but what it lacks in quantity is certainly made up with some lovely bands and lovely people. I live in Huntingdon so within 15 miles there are only Somersham, Waterbeach and possibly Cottenham. In the mighty county of Cambridgeshire  , there are:

    1 Championship band (Soham Comrades)
1 1st section (City of Cambridge)
    1 2nd section (Fulbourn)
    1 3rd section (Littleport)
    2 4th section (Somersham, Waterbeach)
Other bands who don't contest very often:
Manea Silver, March Brass, Chatteris Town, CSD, Cottenham Silver, Wicken Coronation.

Apologies for any inaccuracies. There used to be a great East Anglian banding tradition, but sadly so many have folded. It is worth mentioning that the various centres run by CIMA (Cambridgeshire Instrumental Music Agency) have thriving youth bands.

Good luck to everybody going to Sunny Skeggy tomomrrow!

Sorry Ian - Langley are back in Championship for 2006, so you've lost your 1st section band :)
City of Birmingham for 3rd Section - are they within 15 miles of you?

Champ - Probably Lanner & District (Cornwall) or I dunno :S
    1st - :S not sure!
    2nd - Lympstone (Charlie's Band!! :D) Soundhouse and Phoenix
    3rd - SMTB :D
4th - Bideford, Torrington Silver, Hatherliegh Silver, Okehampton Excelsior
Unreg- Appledore, Hartland, Holsworthy, Tiverton, Watchet RBL
Most of these bands are actually no where near my band! all are at least 20 miles away!

    Championship - Staines (just)
1st Section - not sure if there's one in 15 miles
    2nd Section - Yiewsley
3rd Section - not sure if there's one
4th Section - not sure if there is one

Champ - GUS Band (15 miles)
    1st - Kibworth (6 miles)
2nd - Harborough Band (the pub round the corner)
    3rd - Rushden Windmill (24 miles)
    4th - Corby Silver (12 miles)

Im pretty luck as all the Leicester bands are only 20 - 30 miles up the road too. Its a shame the area doesnt have a recognised music center for higher education as it would be a brass band stronghold if it did. Oh well :(

OK from where I'm sat right now (home) with some very rough distances...

    Championship: Ratby (10 miles...)
    1st: Enderby (1 mile)
    2nd: Wigston (4 miles)
    3rd: Croft Silver (2 miles)
    4th: Cubbington??? (absolutely no idea....)

  20. im amazed that some people can't actually put out a list of 5 bands from all the different sections.

would this not say that thwere could be scope for forming a new band within the area you live in?

Well in my case, tehre's about 5 2nd section bands in about 20 miles of my house, maybe 1 3rd section (Fulham? - is that <20mi?). I have to commute 80miles to the nearest champ band with a horn seat!

Ok my geography isn't great! But from Tyldesley, Manchester I reckon:

    Championship: Wingates
    1st: Tyldesley!
    2nd: Hoover (Bolton)
    3rd: Eccles Band
    4th: Eaton Farnworth & Walkden

Not sure I'd be able to do the Leeds one, no idea which is the closest band!
