Heh, I know where that table came from :)

There's an abundance of strong 1st section contenders there (JCC - used for 1st sec areas in 2008, Spectrum - used for 1st sec areas in 1996, SoM - Pontins 1st sec 2009, JOG, Triumphant Rhapsody (1st sec final 2009), VoaN (more of a 1st sec final piece perhaps), StY (ch sec areas 2009, but on the straightforward side for that).

Aside from that, Entertainments was used for the 3rd sec areas in 2006 (and was as I recall definitely on the hard side at that level - 2nd sec would be a natural level to my mind). Vizcaya was also used for the 3rd sec areas (2004) - and again, it proved tough for the bands (despite having been used for 4th sec final in 1995). Challenging Brass I don't know, but the sporadic usage suggests lower section level. ScP also I don't know, but usage suggests 3rd or 4th section.

Looking at that, I just don't think that it would make good sense to set Vinter for all the lower sections simultaneously. Most of the sensible choices for 2/3/4 have been used already in recentish history for the same contest series. The most sensible one could do in terms of avoiding repeats would be something along the lines of:
    1: John O'Gaunt
    2: Entertainments
3/4: Challenging Brass / Simon called Peter.

I'm doubtful whether this could be a correct call. But stranger things have happened in banding...

Can't be sure, but my recollection of "Challenging Brass" is that it's only 5 or 6 minutes long; probably not suitable ...

Bob, can I be the first to congratulate you on being selected to provide this years' test. Is it possible you could please remove the tricky minim runs from the BBb bass part I've seen ? They have the potential for disaster in my opinion. Otherwise, a very enjoyable test.

I agree, it's a good 2nd Section type piece, but it's too short.

Kingdom of dragons was a good one in 2010 so if that's true it should be a good test

Heard this view before.....but never followed up with information.

So, in summary, no-one here knows ,just all speculation.
