Can anyone help me, i am trying to find out for a friend which test piece written for Brass Band was the 1st to have a Bass Trom solo in it?

Epic Symphony 1931 but is there anything earlier?

    Please help?

    Thanks :tup

Epic Symphony was 1926, not 1931. I think you may have the winner there right from the start...

Thanks Adam! Some of the original band pieces preceding Epic Symphony in 1926 were:

    1913 Labour & Love - Fletcher
    1914 Coriolanus - Jenkins
    1921 Life Divine - Jenkins
    1922 Freedom - Bath
    1923 Oliver Cromwell - Geehl
    1923 The Viking - J Weston Nicholl
1924 On the Cornish Coast - Geehl
    1925 Joan of Arc - D. Wright
    1925 Macbeth - Keighley

So to put the question another way... Does anyone know if any of these pieces include a bass trombone solo?

'Joan of Arc' doesn't, although it does feature some nifty running around soli with basses.

In my Date Monitor role - 'Coriolanus' was 1920, not 1914, wasn't it?

Good spot moomindave! However... Although Coriolanus was first used as a test piece in 1920, it was actually written in 1914, commissioned as the test piece for the Nationals. Since the contest was postponed that year, the piece was used after the war, when the championships resumed in 1920. Btw, thanks for the tip about Joan of Arc!
