Tongwynlais Temperance Band has had a very busy summer with their cornet group. Firstly, long-standing Principal Cornet player, Duncan Broadley and Assistant Principal, Anthony Lydell decided to take a break from the Band due to work and family commitments. Also leaving the Band are 3rd Cornets - Samantha Bridger, who has since signed for Lewis Merthyr and Jenny Jones, who will remain with the Band as Secretary. The Band would like to take this opportunity to thank all of them for their sterling service over the years and wish them the best of luck in their future ventures.

“This all left us in a slightly precarious position” says MD Gareth Pritchard, “but with the help of Band Master, Martyn Patterson and Band Sergeant, Nick Wills (not to mention BT, Orange & Vodafone) we managed not only to fill the vacancies, but by doing this, it also created a situation where we had to make some major changes within the group”.

The first major change was the move of the Band’s Flugel player for the last 13 years or so, Eve Nixon, onto Principal Cornet. The Band’s MD says, on this move, “Eve has done a fantastic job for the Band over the years on Flugel, always safe, secure and confident in rehearsals and performances alike. I’m sure she will grasp this new challenge in her life with both hands”.

The next major change is that joining her on the Solo Cornet Bench will be the Band’s Soprano player of more than 15 years, Gareth Davies. “This, to some, may seem like a strange move after his super performances at Butlins and elsewhere recently. But in the situation we were handed, Gareth magnanimously agreed that in the circumstances, this was the right thing to do for the Band at the moment”, said Gareth P. (too many Gareth’s in this Band!)

Other key movements within the group are Trystan Jones from 4th Man to 2nd Cornet and Tony Burrows from 2nd to 3rd Cornet.

Coming in to the Band to fill the vacancies are David James, ex-Principal Cornet of Burry Port (recently mentioned by 4barsrest.com as one of “the brightest and the best young brass players around in Wales”) who will fill the Flugel seat vacated by Eve.

The new Assistant Principal Cornet is Gareth Hann, who is widely regarded as a top class cornet player and is making a very welcome return to the Band after somewhat of a sabbatical.

Finally, we would like to welcome Morgan James (David’s younger brother) and also from Burry Port, to the Band as the new Soprano Cornet player. Morgan also plays Soprano with the National Youth Brass Band of Wales.

Gareth Pritchard is very excited about the future with all these changes. “This is the biggest change the Band has gone through in years, although it does seem to have ended on a positive note. After starting the summer holidays with trepidation, I am now really looking forward to the up-coming part of the season with some high profile concerts, a CD recording and the contests at Pontins and Butlins. I think we now have a stronger all-round Cornet Section which can only help to enhance the Band’s performances.”
