Apologies for the pic. Can't really call anyone else for having a lousy picture unless I put one of myself in as well. I have no shame. In my defence I was after some worms, being a little peckish at the time...
Stop Press: I just got a brand new
Yamaha Maestro!
I stared playing
the trombone at age 9, but didn't really
get going until 6 months later when I picked up a cornet. Initially my
Dad taught me how to play and I started on 2nd cornet with the
bizarrely named "Mary Webb Country Brass Band" formerly Snailbeach
Brass Band and now Stiperstones Brass.
Once I started secondary school I came under the aegis of Mike Denny and the Shropshire Country School of Music Brass Band where I worked my way painfully up the cornet ranks until leaving to go to Oxford Polytechnic in 1988. During this time I also played with Sabrina Brass and the Dave Hayward Brass Group as well as depping on several different instruments with various local bands - Wem, Jackfield, Newport, Harlescott, Ludlow.
Once in Oxford I played for Jubilee Band in Cowley and Cholsey Band. Whilst playing for Cholsey I discovered I was in fact a thwarted horn player and have stuck to it ever since.
I left Oxford to work abroad for 2 years, then after a number of relocations, different jobs, and a new baby I realised it was 10 years since I'd played seriously and if I didn't get back in soon I never would. After being inspired by the brilliant theMouthPiece.com website I got in touch with Steve Yatesand Doug McKechnie and came back onto 2nd horn in July 2003.
However, being
superfluous to requirements for the 2003 area
qualifying contest in Blackpool I was draughted into percussion
which was terrifying but ultimately great fun and a wonderful
experience....
Finally I've achieved
my ambition and made it back onto Solo Horn. The Badger conquers all!
